As a self-confessed Nanna and inspiring artist, Emilia Lorena is one helluva go-getter. Having migrated to the Gold Coast from Sydney, Emilia’s new home is grunge haven Mo’s Desert Clubhouse in Burleigh. Hosting gigs & workshops under the roof of Mo’s has been a dream come true. As one-third of the Mo gang, Emilia has made a name for herself in the world of making mac (and not the cheesy kind). Check out more about the delightful Em here.
Tell us a little bit about your business Emilia Lorena
“Emilia Lorena is a summary of me and has evolved from a combination of my background in advertising, a passion for events and an enriched love for creating art.
At Emilia Lorena, I create and sell Macrame, teach and host workshops and I also offer unique props and styling services. A big ol’ mixed bag where fun times and art ignite!”
What has inspired you to choose this career path?
“What has inspired me? The fear of being stuck in an ordinary life! My parents lived in a generation where they couldn’t do exactly what they wanted. But, we are free to express ourselves and not be judged for it. So why not attempt to make a living out of your hobby? I guess that’s what I’ve done…”

What do you find most challenging about running your own business and the most fun?
“The most challenging thing about running your own business is the pressure of succeeding. You are the only one that can do this for you!
The unknown is also scary… Will I sell tickets to my workshops? Will people come?
It is challenging running a business in today’s society where most people can only afford their NEEDS, and their WANTS are put on hold. Unfortunately, a Macrame Workshop is a want (editors note: But a pretty fab want if you ask us).”
What do you find most fun about running your own business?
“I really love the execution. When I am running a workshop, sipping wine and meeting so many new people who share a common interest, I have to stop and pinch myself – This is what I get to call work!”
If you could describe your business in three words, what would they be?
“Creative. Local. Social”
What do you get up to in your spare time?
“When I am not planning workshops or creating rad events at Mo’s Desert Clubhouse, you will find me in the ocean. Surfing, swimming, or just soaking in the rays with my best pooch friend Django.”
Why should we come along to your workshops?
“Everyone needs a break in their work week. Learn a new skill in just three hours, and I guarantee you’ll be addicted! Leave a little tipsy, with a full belly of goodness, a handful of new friends and a beautiful new artwork for your home. It’s all wins, baby!”
What do you love most about having your own business on the Gold Coast?
“The Gold Coast KICKS SYDNEY’S ASS!! I have only been here for a few months and I love everything about it. The local feel to every street, super easy access to the most beautiful beaches… The people!! Such an amazing local community vibe… My little macrame business and I feel right at home here.”
Anything we should keep an eye out for?
“I have teamed up with Open Air Cinemas in November when they hit Brisbane and the Gold Coast! I will be running workshops prior to the movies starting and all attending will leave with a new wall hanging, the perfect way to kick off your evening of movies under the stars!”
Last words?
“Now that my Macrame studio has a home inside Mo’s Desert Clubhouse
(the raddest
new venue on the GC), I am finally able to host not only my own but other creative workshops of all types! Keep up to date with all the cool things we have going on at
Mo’s Desert Clubhouse.
If you have a hen’s party, baby shower, team building event or basically anything else you have been put in charge of, we got you covered! Let us handle the catering, drinks, entertainment, and activities! At Mo’s we are your party people.”
