Initially a creative outlet, Mel Carrero’s passion for styling and capturing fashion began with a friend’s borrowed SLR camera. Weaving an intriguing story of entrepreneurial exploration, opening doors and relishing in opportunities, Mel’s career has boomed since the early days. Founding The Chubby Fashionista, Mel has since become a member of the Spell team in the marketing department as an influential photographer, stylist, PR expert and general all rounder. Humbly, Mel does not boast nor brag – although she would have every right to! Having rubbed shoulders with the likes of Miley Cyrus, Mimi Elashiry, Maia Mitchell and some of the globe’s most gorgeous models, Mel is as welcoming as she is talented. See what Mel has learnt along her journey to landing her dream job in the fashion industry. Tell us a little bit about your business The Chubby FashionistaBasically I started a little blog to show off my styling skills – I wanted to begin fashion styling and it was hard finding photographers to collaborate with, so one day I borrowed an SLR, got together with a friend who modelled, another who did hair and makeup and created a shoot! What I ended up finding out over time was that people really responded to the photographic and modeling elements of my work. So from there I started shooting regularly. These days I just have photography as a side business to my full time marketing job – which also includes a lot of photo shoot production and photography, exactly what I started off doing!
If you could describe The Chubby Fashionista in three words, what would they be?Not-too-serious, fun and fashionable
Describe a highlight for you during your careerLanding my current job at Spell & the Gypsy Collective and all of the adventures it has brought me so far.
What do you find most challenging about running your own business?I would have to say that when I was a full time freelancer, I was always working for someone else. I think the most challenging thing might have been getting the confidence to do things myself – you never know where it may lead. Sometimes you just have to take the leap!
What is your number one tip for other entrepreneurs setting out in the world of business?Take the leap if you believe in what you’re doing! I read lots of entrepreneurial books and magazines when I was working another job, and I decided that maybe running my own business full-time wasn’t for me – I just wanted to work for a brand I really loved, which is what I have been doing alongside my little side business for over two years and I love it! I have also been working on another side business, so stay tuned!
What does your position at Spell involve/what does an average day look like?
What do you love most about working at Spell? All of the above – the varied nature of my job, the social aspect and getting to travel a lot!
How do you spend your spare time? What is spare time? Haha! I have to really create spare time, the last few months I have been saying no to things to try and have some down time with my partner, who is renovating our house at the moment without any help from me! So I have been enjoying just plodding about at home and even doing a little bit of gardening lately – trying not to kill my house plants and planting succulents!
